Black Vomiting (吐黑)

Duanni Yixing Teapot[1], commissioned by Wu Dacheng (Kezhai chop), late 19th Century. Note the minor “black vomit” below the spout; it is my opinion that this level of tu hei does not constitute a flaw in this ware. Sotheby’s Auction, London.

Black Vomiting (吐黑, tu hei)[2] is a common potential flaw where the surface of a zisha teapot is stained black. When the staining is light (less visible) and limited to the foot rim and lid flange, tu hei is generally accepted as part of a Yixing teapot’s unavoidable patina development from use (brewing tea). However, when the staining is heavy, such that the natural color of the Yixing is altered and the “black vomit”[3] clouds the visible outer surface of the teapot, its presence is considered a flaw.
